Gardening can be one of the most therapeutic and relaxing hobbies. Not only will you be able to de-stress, but you will also reap what you sow.
However, for Dom Lowe, who chose to spend time on his backyard after retiring as a managing director at a local brewery, he certainly didn’t expect to find out that he is still clueless on what lurks under his ground. In short, he got the shock of his life in his very own garden.
Mysterious Patch
Being a busy bee who didn’t want to stay at his house all day after his retirement, Dom decided to do some yard work.
However, over time, he noticed an odd patch of land that was kept being dug up. Looking at it, he can’t seem to find anything special about it and all the more was he curious about who would come every night to touch that specific area.
So, he tried catching the culprit by doing what movies taught us: spy from the bedroom and take the bad guy in the act.
So one late night, he just did that – stayed in his room and wait for the suspect to do his routine at Dom’s backyard.
However, as hours passed by, there was nobody that came. Was it possible that the person had an idea that he was watching?
Then, convinced that he will just throw the white flag, he noticed that someone started digging, and there he saw that it wasn’t a “he” but an “it.”
No, it’s not an alien at all, but a dog that’s been breaking into Dom’s property to dig in a specific spot. He shooed away the pooch and thought to himself that there’s still something amiss – why was the canine coming back in that special area when to the blind eye there’s nothing there?
So he decided to take the matter into his own hand and investigate. The first thing that he and son Jon did was to secure the perimeter with a fence to avoid the pet from vandalizing his property again.
Father-Son Duo Investigation
Without further shenanigans and interruption, the father and son started digging in the exact spot where the dog has been visiting night after night.
It turns out that it wasn’t just a burrow where the animal had kept his bone, but they noticed there was a deep hole and the duo decided to just keep digging until a person could fit in it.
Puzzled if the pooch has been smelling something from the hole, Dom decided to enter the chamber and started to hand sorts of things to his son.
There were OXO tins, glass bottles, colanders, and many others that may have been from the by-gone age, but are really worthless nowadays.
Dom even described the pit as “cesspool” because there was a lot of trash, but he was proven wrong when as Jon was clearing out, he saw a pipe that was sticking out. So the 26-year-old asked for his father’s help in pulling it out, and eventually, their efforts rendered fruitful.
Regretful Discovery
However, as soon as they pulled it out, they noticed that there was something more than a piece of pipe.
Dom immediately and carefully took the item from Jon and learned that it was a part of an incendiary bomb from World War II.
At the time, they wished they didn’t let their curiosity tickled them. What’s worse was that the bomb looked like it hadn’t exploded yet – needless to say theirs and their neighbors’ lives were in grave danger.
Despite them forcing the pipe out, it didn’t explode, which means they were safer than initially thought. As that was the case, they decided that they shouldn’t panic.
So Dom placed it over the fence and the unthinkable happened – the bomb rolled off. Just as this happened they ran for cover, expecting that it’ll explode.
Fortunately, nothing happened and they just left it there until the experts arrive to check the said explosive.
Experts’ Verdict
Thankfully, that bomb found in Pensford, England was inactive after it was X-rayed by the Royal Logistics Corps’ bomb disposal team.
Apparently, during the last world war, aircrafts would often unload bombs like this to lighten the planes.
The village was near Bristol, where a lot of air raids happened, which means the case wasn’t a surprise. Because the pipe wasn’t going to explode, the officer said the father and son could keep the item.
